This year Titleist released the second generation of its most affordable three-piece golf ball. In this 2022 Titleist Tour Speed golf ball review, we’ll find out what changed from the first generation. Additionally, we’ll see if those changes lead to any improvement in performance. Let’s start with some basic information.

Regarding design, the most significant changes have been the reformulated high-speed core and casing layer. There were no changes when it came to the Titleist performance urethane cover and 346 quadrilateral dipyramid dimple design. Another area that remained unchanged was the compression rating staying around 78.

Titleist has been marketing this golf ball as much as their crown jewels Pro V1 and Pro V1x or the AVX. While those three models are in the high-priced premium balls category, this ball is meant for a wider audience. Everything about it sounds very promising, let’s see how it did on the course.

My Verdict

This is a good golf ball. At least that is true when it comes to my experience with it. I am also sure a lot of people would agree with that. Titleist is not even my preferred golf ball brand, although I am seriously thinking about it. There is a reason they are up there among the brands, and this ball is a case that supports that.

Despite everything, it comes down to personal preference. In case you are considering this ball, I would encourage you to give it a try. Don’t expect miracles, but do expect a solid performance. Worst case, you go back to your previous ball model. No matter what happens on the golf course, always remember to enjoy your time out there.

Who Is This Ball For?

This ball could suit a couple of different types of golfers. One would be a higher handicapper who wants to try a three-piece golf ball. The second is a lower handicapper looking for solid performance but wants to stay on budget. Of course, there are other boxes this ball has to tick to work well.

The compression rating of an average of 82 means its softness is going to be medium to slightly hard. So it might work if you do not like too soft or too hard golf balls. Its dimples technology contributes to a medium flight trajectory. That could suit you if you are looking to lower your ball flight. It does go far in case distance is the most important thing for your game.

On the Green

This was a very mixed experience in my case. To start with, I will say the ball held the line well on the majority of the putts. That part was very satisfying. Another part that I liked was the feeling off the putter’s face. The sound was just a touch clickier than I am used to, that is mostly because of the compression rating that borders the higher side.

Now, when it came down to the putting pace it became interesting. For some reason, I was leaving almost all longer putts short of the hole. By that, I mean not even close to a gimme-second putt. Short putts were better with an occasional hiccup here and there. Overall putting was decent, with a respectable result in the end.

Around the Green

Here is where the ball performed quite well. I am a big fan of bump-and-run chip shots, therefore that is the most important segment I pay attention to. It simply worked and bailed me out on a few occasions. I found it easy enough to control the distance on both shorter and longer chips. The ball would stop in closer proximity to the hole after a nice roll on the green.

Even on a couple of occasions when I had to hit it a bit higher in the air it went ok. I would not land it as close, but it was not a disaster either. The feeling off the clubface was on the softer side, with a slightly louder noise on contact than some other balls like the Bridgestone e12 Contact or Srixon Q-Star Tour which are both lower compression balls.

Approach Shots

Out of all the segments of the game, I was most impressed with this one. Since I test balls on a par 3 course, all the shots qualify as approach shots. Initially, I was a bit skeptical about the ball’s stopping power. Despite the fact the flight trajectory was medium on average, it was stopped fairly quickly once on the green.

Even more so, it had enough spin that helped with stopping. That worked so well, that several times stopped next to the spot it landed. Another positive thing was the mis-hits. They were not bad at all, with a more than manageable dispersion. My tendency as a right-handed player is to miss to the left, and the misses were consistent.

Appearance and Price

Last time around when I was reviewing the Tour Speed I was a bit critical of the look. More precisely, I was not a fan of the alignment arrow. It just looked a bit busy and did not suit my eye. Now I have to say, I find it more likable. The designers tidied it up and it looks better. Still not my favorite, but an improvement for sure.

Price wise the ball falls into the upper class. That being said we have to consider what value we are getting. Since we are talking about a three-piece urethane cover golf ball, we are getting a good value. Not just because of how it is built, but because it is an all-around good-performing ball. It is available in white and yellow colors.

Durability

I have written this in the past, and I will repeat it. Titleist makes quality golf balls. That reflects both performance and durability. It is one of those things you do not have to be concerned about when getting one of their golf balls. This goes across the board with all their models, and the Tour Speed is no exception.

Yes, it did have some marks after the round, but they were minimal. There was maybe one scuff, but nothing concerning whatsoever. You could safely play the same ball multiple rounds without a significant impact on performance. Once again, great job by the engineers.
