If you ever wondered if colored golf balls perform better or worse than white ones, you are not alone. I have asked myself that question in the past. Since I did test a few colored golf balls, like the Titleist Velocity or Bridgestone e6, I got an answer. I did not find any particular deviation in performance compared to white golf balls. So, there is no advantage or disadvantage when it comes to gameplay.

When it comes to tracking the ball, that can reduce your play time and make it easier to see where your ball is at any moment. In certain weather conditions colored golf balls might be easier to track. Additionally, that can save you time when you have to look for it and speed up play. On the other hand, if you play in the fall, colored balls might be harder to locate when they fall among leaves on the ground.

Tips for Selecting the Right Colored Golf Ball

Selecting the right colored ball for your game should be the same process as selecting any golf ball. You should choose a ball that suits your game. It is a bonus if that golf ball model comes in colored options. Since most models nowadays come in one or more additional colored options, you should be fine. There are some additional facts to consider during the selection process.

If your selected golf ball comes in multiple colored options, start with your personal color preference. You might prefer fluorescent colors like yellow or bright green. Otherwise colors like red, blue, or orange can come into play.

Then consider the season when you are golfing the most. If you are a year-round golfer, you can consider different colors for different seasons. Otherwise, pick the one that will suit the season when you golf, like spring or summer.

Needless to say, golf is an ever-evolving industry. Since its resurrection a few years ago, the biggest brands have been more active than ever. Every year they release a large amount of new products. Among those products are golf balls and new ones are released on average every two years. Not necessarily new models, but mostly existing models improved versions.

One of the emerging trends is colored golf balls. Not only new models are being released, but an increasing number of existing models are getting a colored option. In some cases, there are multiple colored options per golf ball model which is great. More importantly, colored golf balls are not falling behind their white counterparts when it comes to performance.

As technology advances, companies are going to be experimenting with new materials and finishes. This will make colored golf balls even more attractive to try out. Also, things like balls with color-changing effects or UV-sensitive coatings that shift shades under sunlight could be a matter of time.

Beyond White

Golf is rapidly becoming more inclusive than ever. Things that were unthinkable not so long ago are being accepted on golf courses. Don’t get me wrong, things have their place and a lot of traditions have to be respected. However, changes are inevitable.

Playing white golf balls was one of the most traditional things imaginable. Now, you can see even professional golfers playing with colored balls. Granted, it is the case mostly on the PGA Tour Champions, but it is still happening. Even I am considering playing with a colored golf ball, at least for the darker fall and winter months.
