Titleist initially released Velocity in 2012, and it seems like ages ago. This ball which has been on the market for over a decade, has reached its sixth edition. That alone says something and that something is the ball’s popularity. Nowadays no product stays that long on the market if it does not do well. It is the third edition I will try so I am excited for the 2024 Titleist Velocity golf ball review.

This is a distance ball, therefore it is no surprise everything on the Titleist website emphasizes that.

They state it is engineered for high speed, high launch, and low long-game spin for explosive distance.

The key features include the high-speed LSX core, the fast NaZ+ cover, and a spherically-tilled 350 octahedral dimple design.

Everything sounds promising and based on the experience this ball should not disappoint. Let’s move on.

My Verdict

This ball did exactly what it was engineered for, it went a long distance. Does that make it a great golf ball? It depends on who you ask. Was it the best ball ever? Hardly. Nonetheless, it comes from the Titleist lineup, which speaks for itself. One thing I have to single out is its outstanding durability. Possibly it is the most durable ball I have ever tried. Another thing I have to mention is that the price point is a bit steep compared to the competitor distance balls like the TaylorMade Distance+ or the Callaway Warbird. All in all, you get exactly what you look for.

Who Is This Ball For?

This is a simple answer, this ball is for players prioritizing distance above everything else. When I say everything else, I mean everything else. Performance-wise, it will not give you much wiggle room. The workability is low due to its lower spin rate. This includes the short game within 100 yards from the green and around the green. With its compression in the mid-80s and a harder cover, you won’t get any super soft feeling.

If you are indeed a distance seeker, you will enjoy this ball. Not only you will hit it a long distance, but it will also roll more due to the lower spin and give you some extra total distance. The average higher flight trajectory will help a bit with stopping but don’t count on that if you play on dryer and harder surfaces. If you are intrigued enough, read below how it performed in different segments of the game.

On the Green

Let me start with the feel. It feels a bit firmer off the putter face compared to TruFeel. That is no surprise since the TruFeel is lower compressed and softer. Therefore, it produces a slightly clickier sound when making contact. When it comes to the performance itself, it was decent. There were no issues with holding the line on firmer putts. Also, the distance control was quite good on longer putts over 10 feet. If you prefer a mellow sound and a softer feel when putting, this might not be the ball for you.

Around the Green

Similarly to putting, I felt the ball come a touch harder off the clubface. This was more noticeable on higher trajectory chips. It still felt fine when chipping, just with a bit louder sound. Here you can see the lack of short game spin. On bump-and-runs, medium, and higher trajectory chips some adjustment is needed. I had to land the ball a bit closer to let it run and not overshoot the pin or the green. Once I adapted to it the results were not as bad as you might think.

Approach Shots

If you read my reviews, you know I review balls on a par 3 course. That makes every shot an approach shot. Firstly, if you are looking for distance you will find it with this ball. On full swings, it went further compared to most balls I have reviewed. Unlike with putting and chipping, I liked the feeling when striking it. If you like striking golf balls, you will most likely enjoy this one.

The lack of spin is present which is compensated with a higher trajectory flight. That is the only way the ball can stop on the green without running through. In fact, when I purposely hit lower or medium trajectory shots, nothing was stopping it quickly. Again, in that case, some adjustment is needed. Either you have to club down or aim the ball to land the way to give it room to stop on the green.

It is worth noting that my misses were consistent with my usual ones. Another thing I would like to mention is that the Velocity has a fairly straight flight. This is good news if you are fighting with hooks and slices. It won’t stop them, but it will make them less prominent.

Durability

There is no other word to describe its durability but exceptional. After a full round on a par 3 course, I could not find any visible marks or scuffs. The only thing I found was a bit of yellowish color it got from hitting a tree or something similar. As mentioned above, this is arguably the most durable golf ball I have ever tried. As a reference, I have tried over 30 different golf ball models and editions since I started golfing in 2020.

Appearance and Price

It is a Titleist golf ball, as simple as that. They all look cool with the cursive logo, the only thing that sets them apart is the alignments. The Velocity has a very nice alignment drawn on it that looks almost like it was done with a marker. It is a good putting aid if you align your ball when on the green. I certainly liked that because I align my ball when putting. Besides the classic white, you can buy the Velocity in the Matte Orange and Matte Green variations.

Price is one area where the ball could do better. I know, at 29.99 USD (currently $24.99) for a dozen balls it is not too expensive and is a Titleist after all. Granted, with the shown durability, the price is not so bad. However, the other distance balls from competitors are cheaper. We are talking about the two-piece ionomer cover balls. Even the previous model still holds its price which speaks to its quality and customer satisfaction.
